Celebrating the 300th Anniversary of the Guru Gaddi
Today we are honoured to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the guru gaddi (300 saal). Here is some information taken from www.sikhnet.com/300saal :300 years ago, something unprecedented, unique and wonderful occurred. After thousands of years, the tradition of living Gurus and disciples took a turn towards the dawning Aquarian Age, in which every person is soverign and honored in his or her own innate wisdom and consciousness.
It had always been the tradition for the title of Guru to be passed along a clearly defined line of human lineage. In many cases, bloodlines could be traced all the way back to pre-vedic times. In 1708, Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, having consciously witnessed the sacrifice of the lives of all his four sons, handed over the legacy to the Guruship of the Shabad Guru, embodied in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib. He understood that the age of lineage was over, and so he consciously left no heirs. The unique beauty of this is that the Siri Guru Granth Granth, our present Guru, can neither be altered nor it can be changed in any way. It is a touchstone for all humanity that exists beyond the limitations of time and space, now and in the future.
This year St. Georges id privileged as it has been given the chance to start off a special London sikhi month in honour of 300 saal. Look out for posters

Sikh Society update!
A great thanks to all who attended the ' Reflections on Gurbani: Mool Mantar' presentation. All who attended gave positive feedback and we look forward to presenting similar events in the future. The evening was also the venue for the Sikh Society awards-giving ceremony where Menaka Jegatheesan was awarded a prize for here invaluable contribution to the Sikh Society Tutoring scheme, in which the Society hosts revision sessions and a mentoring scheme for members and non-members. She served as a example for many of us to do as much as we can, for the betterment of others.
Pictured above: Menaka receives her Certificate and prize.
In other news, the applications for next years committee are taking place. Watch this space for updates!

The Virtues of a Khalsa
The tenth Guru of the Sikhs ( Siri Guru Gobind Singh Ji) gave up his four sons, however, when questioned as to how he felt about that loss, he explained that he has thousands of sons, in the form of the khalsa. Here is a short video describing some of the virtues of a Khalsa.Friday, May 11, 2007
What are we afraid of?

Pretty inspiring isn't it? Something we can perhaps all learn from. Sorry if the image is too small to read, just click on it to expand it!!!

Vaisakhi!!!
Last year SGUL Sikh Society showed a video about Vaisakhi. The event was such a sucess that we thought it would be appropriate to put it up here in the wake of another approaching Vaisakhi. If you've ever wondered why Sikh's celebrate Vaisakhi, then here is an excellent video describing the miracle of Vaisakhi. It would be great if people can email in their photos snaps of their respective Vaisakhi celebrations or email in any short articles regarding their Nagar Kirtain experiences which they would like to share.Sikhism: The Basics and Foundamentals
Despite the range of literature available, it is still quite tricky to find media which appropriately and successfully portray the basics and foundations of Sikhism. Here is quite a good video describing many areas of Sikhism and makes for a good watch if you have some time. It describes much of the basics of Sikhism, and is portrayed in a non-biased format, however it is quite a long video, enjoy!Friday, March 30, 2007
The Big Question
One of the main questions the Sikh Society is asked is why do Sikhs keep their hair. Perhaps the real question why DON'T all people keep thir hair. However if Sikhs don't keep their hair...are they really Sikhs by definition?
